clavier: clavier: [18] The Latin word for ‘key’ was clāvis (it was related to claudere ‘close’). Its application to the keys of a musical instrument has contributed two words to English: clavier, which came via French or German from an unrecorded Latin *clāviārius ‘key-bearer’; and clavichord [15], from medieval Latin clāvichordium, a compound of Latin clāvis and Latin chorda, source of English chord.

Its diminutive form clāvicula was applied metaphorically to the collar-bone (hence English clavicle [17]) on account of the bone’s resemblance to a small key. And in Latin, a room that could be locked ‘with a key’ was a conclāve – whence (via Old French) English conclave [14]. Also related to clāvis is cloy.
