It derives from Latin birrus ‘hooded cloak’, which is probably of Celtic origin (Middle Irish berr ‘short’ has been compared), and is thus a relative of biretta [16], the term for the square cap worn by Roman Catholic clergy, formed as a diminutive of birrus in Italian (berretta) and Spanish (birreta).
